Insulation resistance is a key parameter for any electric heater to operate safely. All Watlow® heaters undergo insulation resistance testing before leaving the manufacturing facilities. However, during shipping and storage, the mineral insulation (magnesium oxide or MgO) material used in metal sheath heaters can absorb moisture rendering the heater unusable until the moisture is purged from the heater.

All appliances have some form of power conversion. Generally speaking, electric heaters have been behind the curve when it comes to power conversion technology. Traditionally they are controlled by pulsing the power received, using what amounts to a rapid on/off switch. While this allows a heater to operate at a given set temperature, it is receiving the full voltage when turned on, which can cause damage over time in some cases. Watlow's innovative power conversion technology can smoothly adjust power up or down, as needed, which opens up possibilities for better heating and sensing in any array of specialized applications.

A temperature control panel is essential for maximizing the performance and longevity of a thermal system, and proper installation is required to ensure safety, reliability and accuracy. If properly wired and installed, the control panel will help monitor and manage the heat output to maintain the top efficiency of your system.

The benefits of precise thermal control also come with an engineering challenge: Keeping the complexity of the system in check while addressing issues of thermal uniformity and system responsiveness. Adaptive Thermal Systems® (ATS™) is a suite of technologies designed to combine heating, sensing and control technologies to meet this challenge, and reduce the wiring and space requirements of diverse systems while improving real-time sensing, diagnostics and control.

Even after following instructions correctly and checking and rechecking the Watlow® installation manual, sometimes the flip of a switch does not activate an electric heater. In these cases, troubleshooting the problem can often lead to the most straightforward solutions to properly start a heater. When trying to assess heater failure, take stock of these troubleshooting questions that can help determine the immediate cause of the problem.

New environmental legislation has created an engineering challenge for heavy-duty diesel engines.CO2 and NOx emissions must fall below stricter standards; at the same time greater engine efficiency has resulted in a corresponding loss of exhaust gas temperature, leading to lower catalytic activity. This is particularly concerning when it comes to NOx emissions for Cold Start and Low Load Cycles, as there is a lot of thermal inertia in the aftertreatment system.

Advanced ceramic heaters offer a number of benefits when it comes to the design and marketing of analytical equipment. Many of the heaters used in today's analytical equipment are metal-sheathed heaters based on legacy technology designed some 20 or 30 years ago, potentially limiting design innovation. By contrast today's advanced ceramic heaters are smaller, respond faster, can be more accurately controlled and can be more resistant to environmental contamination. Watlow's ULTRAMIC advanced ceramic heaters in particular can help analytical equipment manufacturers improve product performance and design, as well as accelerate their time to market.
